PORT DESCRIPTION

Location: The commercial sea port of Archangel is situated at the mouth of the Severnaya Dvina River in the SE corner of Dvina Bay (in the White Sea).
General overview: The bay is usually frozen over from the beginning of Nov and the ice breaks up again in May. The Commercial Port of Archangel comprises three separate cargo areas, Ekonomiya, Leviy Bereg and Bakaritsa. There are 22 cargo berths with depths alongside of 6.2m to 9.6m.
The principal exports are timber props, pulpwood, flax, tar, pitch, turpentine, furs and grain; the chief imports are coal, saltfish, hardware, machinery, tea and coffee.
Load Line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.
Max size: Largest vessel handled: LOA 160m. The port can accommodate ships of up to 175m in length, 30m beam and 8m draft.
PRE ARRIVAL INFORMATION
Radio: VHF: All vessels when approaching the port of Archangel should establish radio contact through the coastal "Archangel Radio" station which operates throughout 24 hours on VHF ch 16.
NAVIGATION
Pilot: Pilot boat meets vessels at Mudyug mid-channel lightbuoy No 1 (Lat 64°57'N, Long 030°05'E). When proceeding to the port of Archangel, Masters should advise ETA 24 hours prior to the Harbour Master. Four hours prior to approaching the Beresovy Bar, Masters should advise more precise time of arrival. The Inflot Agency will arrange a pilot.
Anchorages: There is an anchorage at the mouth of Reka Severnaya Dvina off the town of Archangel in depths of 7m to 18m.
Tidal range and flow: Influenced by drifting ice and prevailing winds (4.0m max).
Dock density: 1000.
Weather: Prevailing winds: Variable.
Charts: BA 2273, 2280; Soviet 621. Admiralty Pilot NP72.
Restrictions: During HW vessels may proceed through the channel providing their length is less than 160.0m and with a draft not exceeding 8.0m. Vessels going to timber mills Nos 2 and 3 may pass through the draw bridge only during the night from 0120hrs to 0320hrs local time. During poor visibility (less than 0.5 nm) and during winds over force 8 Beaufort scale, movement of vessels is prohibited.
Tugs: Available. Regulations on the number of tugs must be followed.
BERTHS AND CARGO
Names/Nos:
General cargo/Bulk berths: The loading of timber is undertaken at 22 cargo berths with 6.0-8.5m water depth alongside.
Container berths: A container berth is situated in the port with modern container handling equipment, berth length 270m.
Tanker berths: There are three berths for seagoing vessels in Kuznechikha River. Each is 150m is length, max draft 7.08m.
Storage: There are covered warehouses and open concrete floored sheds on the port berths.
Ballast/slop reception: Available.

Bunkering: Bunkers are available from barges stationed in the Town roadstead or can be delivered by lighters.

Airport facilities: Daily flights to Moscow and Leningrad for international connections.
Nearest railway: Archangel.
Public holidays: New Year's Day, International Women's Day (Mar 8), World Labour Days (May 1 and 2), Victory Day (May 9), Constitution Day (Oct 7), October Revolution (Nov 7 and 8).
