On 27 October 2011 there completed the second stage of research expedition of the State enterprise “Yuzhmorgeologiya” that worked on the Krusenshternskoye field in Sharapov Shar bay of the Kara Sea. The surveying was performed during summer navigations of 2010-2011 with the client of “Gazflot” Ltd. within the framework of the state programme for developing of the Artctic shelf of Russia.
Belfreight played as a general contractor here to organize the expedition and to provide its own and chartered fleet with a special vessel of “Geoshelf” as a base to accommodate more than one hundred of expedition members. Shallow-draught tugs of “BTP-615” and “Plotovod” along with a couple of barges to place the survey equipment acted as supporting fleet.
The normal work of the expedition was secured by Belfreight vessels, providing it with provision, fuel and supply during the whole season. To comply with the expedition requirements Belfreight arranged as well a series of preparatory works starting from purchase of the necessary equipment and up to modernization of the fleet.
As a result, the expedition succeded in composition of a detailed geological map of the Kruzenshterskoye field located in a shallow bay of Sharapov Shar in the Kara sea. The field was discovered in 1976 with the major part of resources lying under the seabed. There were 8 natural gas and 4 condensate pools revealed within the field.

On behalf of the Gazflot Ltd. in Summer navigation of 2011 Belfreight arranged two towages of the self-lifting floating rig of Amazon.
In July the rig was towed from its base port of Yamburg to the work site near Kharasavey port. That was so called a “wet” towage with the rig towed when afloat.
In October, by the end of drilling season the rig of Amazon was brought to Murmansk for a scheduled maintenance. In this case the rig was towed in a “dry” way , i.e. when put on a barge.
The “dry” transportation is a complicated affair with some important moments to bear in mind. First, a special oceanic barge had to be chartered in Europe capable of accepting both 6500 t of the rig’s considerable weight and its specific construction. Then, to enable the foreign flag barge to trade in the Russian sector of Arctic it had to be re-flagged to hoist the Russian flag.
The most complicated stage of the project appeared to be the loading of the rig itself onto the barge. The loading took place in the straight of Yugorskiy Shar, a facility-free area. The barge was placed by means of a tug to under the rig first when the latter was standing lifted on its legs, then the rig lowered itself onto the barge deck and got sea-fastened. The performance of such operation required nearly perfect conditions and extraordinary accuracy.
On each project stage Belfreight acted as a general contractor, operator and co-ordinaror for the Gazflot Ltd. To succeed in the project realization there were serious Russian companies and experienced foreign advisers contracted. The performer of the towages was i/b Dixon of the “Rosmorport - Arkhangelsk branch” State enterprise. The carriage and sea fastening project manuals for the rig were developed by JSC “CNIIMF”.
In fact,it was the second involvement of Belfreight in the “dry” towage of the rig of “Amazon”. The first one took place in the season of 2006-2007 on the route of Yamburg-Murmansk-Yamburg.

An expedition of the JSC “Arctic marine engineering-geological expeditions” to carry out engineering-hydrographic and engineering-geodesic survey in the bay of Sharapov Shar of the Baydaratskaya bay completed.
To realize the assigned tasks they used mv “Mary 2” as a carrier for scientific equipment , a motor-launch, a drill rig and a special crane of extended carrying capacity.
In spite of critically shallow depths in the area the vessel managed to bring the expedition to the work site and was providing it with supply for near a month time.
The works fulfilled by the expedition were soil sampling, engineering drilling, measuring of hydro-meteorological parameters of the aquatic environment and so forth. The fact that the vessel could approach the survey site as close as possible allowed to succesfully complete the works in schedule date.
The expedition resulted in a full accomplishment of a complex of engineering-geological survey in the off-shore area of the Western part of Yamal peninsula in the vicinity of the “Kruzenshternskoye” gas field.

The ship of "Bugrino" that sank in 2002 nearby 167 berth was salvaged through efforts of the daugter enterprise "Arkhangelsk demolition plant" on 16 September 2011.
The ship has been towed to water area of the demolition plant in Turdeevo for further utilization.
They used to build such tugs in Finland within 1946 - 1957 having general dimensions as: gross tonnage - 533 t, length - 47,2 m, width - 10,4 m, draught - 3,7 m, average speed - 10 kn, main steam engine - 800 hp.
There were 64 tugs build for the USSR all in all.
Arkhangeslk sea port administration appreciated very much the salvage work of the entrprise staff aimed both at raising of the navigation safety at the port of Arkhangelsk and improvement of ecological situation on the river of Northern Dvina.

In September 2011 Belfreight completed the project for the oversized cargo delivery (structures and accessories for underwater production facility) from a port of Norway to the Kirinskoye field at the Sakhalin island. The customer was “Gazprom Dobycha Shelf” Ltd.
A special requirement to meet was to perform the shipment in the shortest possible time. So, the only avenue to realize the project seemed to use the Northern Sea Route, having a suitable vessel available that could be of high ice-class and capable of taking aboard structures of 22,5m x 22,5m in size. In view of the required vessel type lacking a decision was made to re-construct a “Pioner Moskvy” type vessel to enlarge her 17,3 m beam to take cargoes as wide as 22,5m in width. The core of the re-construction was mounting of special foundations on the hold hatches along with instalment of special steel “wings” on the vessel sides, acting as supports for the oversized cargo. An extra dry ballast was taken aboard as well to secure the vessel stability. Finally, it took only 26 days to ship the cargo to destination, which is twice as less than to use alternative Southern routes.
Apart from transportation affairs, we also took part in arrangement of customs clearance of the cargo. We managed to get it inspected on board, without discharge, enabling the vessel to stay at the port of Murmansk for 24 hours only.
The project manuals for transportation and sea fastening were developed by JSC “CNIIMF”. The carriage was performed by mv “Pioner Moskvy” of JSC “Northern Shipping Company”. The vessel re-construction and consequent dismantling of the fastening was carried out with a participation of Belfreight affiliated enetrprise the “ Arkhangelsk Ship Demolition Plant” Ltd.
